Filippi to replace recovering Kral at Silverstone

5 July 2010

The Super Nova team has confirmed that Italy’s Luca Filippi will deputise for the injured Josef Kral for this weekend’s latest two rounds of the championship at Silverstone. The latter continues to recover following his high-flying accident in Valencia.

With Kral having been launched into the air after hitting the back of Rodolfo Gonzalez’s car, he will be unable to compete this weekend due to fracturing two of his vertebrae – a fate which Formula 1’s Mark Webber managed to avoid despite suffering a similar accident at the same circuit and on the same day.

“First of all I wish Josef Kral well and hope he returns to racing soon,” Filippi, who finished runner-up in the most recent GP2 Asia Series campaign and is also sitting second in the ongoing Auto GP championship, said on Monday afternoon.

“From my point of view, this has come as a nice surprise and is a great opportunity. We have known each other for a long time and I am sure we can take off where we left off. I am really motivated to do a good job.”

“I spoke with Josef Kral in hospital at the weekend, where he will be for another couple of weeks,” Team Principal David Sears added. “I explained the whole teams’ thoughts are with him to wish him a speedy recovery.

“We have decided jointly with Josef’s management to place Luca Filippi back in with our team, as he is the best choice to be Marcus Ericsson’s team-mate. It’s just sad that Josef will not be there racing at circuits that he knows well.”
