Tung sustains vertebra fracture

1 August 2010

DAMS GP2 driver Ho-Pin Tung has been confirmed as having fractured part of his back following a frontal accident with Jules Bianchi in Saturday’s GP2 Feature Race at the Hungaroring.

Upon exiting Turn 1 in Hungary, DAMS driver Tung – official reserve pilot for Renault F1 – was unable to avoid ploughing into the stationary Jules Bianchi’s ART Grand Prix car, which was facing upcoming traffic following a spin.

The Dutch-Chinese driver is currently housed in the same Budapest hospital where Ferrari F1 driver Felipe Massa received life-saving treatment a year ago.

Renault F1 statement:

‘Following yesterday’s accident in the GP2 Feature Race at the Hungaroring, Ho-Pin Tung had an MRI scan this morning, which confirmed a very small fracture on the lumbar vertebra.

No surgery is required and his period of recovery is not expected to be an extended one. He will remain in Budapest’s AEK Hospital until Tuesday and will then return home to rest. A further medical examination is scheduled for two weeks’ time to assess his recovery.’
