It has been confirmed that Portugal’s Álvaro Parente will be making a GP2 comeback in Belgium this weekend, having been released as a Virgin Racing Formula 1 reserve driver earlier in the year. In the process, the 25-year-old replaces Alberto Valerio.
Having switched from GP2 with Ocean Racing Technology to F1 with Virgin for 2010, Parente’s relationship with the latter fell through when key sponsor the Tourism Institute of Portugal failed to complete payments to the Sheffield-based outfit.
After driving for Coloni for Bahrain’s final two races of the most recent GP2 Asia Series, Álvaro then signed up for the Superleague Formula in May and is contesting the championship with FC Porto.
“I know the team and I think that I’ll have the conditions to try to get some good results,” he said of Coloni on Tuesday.
“I’m looking forward to returning to Spa-Francorchamps and to being able to give some good results to Coloni so I can thank them the trust that the team and the sponsors have in me”.
With Valerio not racing, it is now unsure whether the Brazilian will see out the season. “I race at Spa-Francorchamps, after that we will see what happens,” Parente added. “I would like to complete the season but that is out of my hands.”
