It has been confirmed by driver management company Gravity that Ho-Pin Tung, who continues to recover from his accident in Hungary, will be replaced at DAMS this weekend by the returning Romain Grosjean. However, the position of reserve driver at Renault F1 remains vacant.
Tung was taken out of action at the Hungaroring when he came into heavy contact with the front of Jules Bianchi’s ART Grand Prix car, which had spun and was facing oncoming traffic as the field exited the first corner in Saturday’s Feature Race.
“It’s never very nice to replace another driver due to injury and I really wish Ho-Pin a quick recovery,” said Franco-Swiss Grosjean, who competed in seven F1 races for Renault last year.
“While awaiting his return, I’m delighted to be able to lend a hand to the DAMS team for which I drove at Hockenheim just over a month ago.”
Tung will now be the subject of another medical assessment before the Italian Grand Prix weekend, with that deciding his fate for the penultimate meeting of the GP2 season.
“A few days after my return from Budapest I slowly began training again,” explained the driver who is Dutch-born but Chinese by nationality. “I’ve made quick progress and my back is less painful but the examinations carried out at the start of the week show that the fracture hasn’t healed 100 percent.
“It would be too dangerous to get back behind the wheel now. Of course, I’m disappointed but I’m continuing my physical recovery programme and I hope to come back very soon. I’d like to wish DAMS, Jérôme (D’Ambrosio) and Romain a very successful weekend.”
