Racing Engineering has announced that Renault F1 reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung will be competing in GP2’s final two races of the season in Abu Dhabi this weekend, with regular driver Christian Vietoris having been taken to hospital on Thursday evening.

Diagnosed with appendicitis, German Vietoris is naturally not able to run alongside Dani Clos this weekend, with Tung being called in after racing for DAMS earlier this season.

‘Christian is very much missed this weekend by his Racing Engineering crew, who wishes him a speedy recovery,’ reads a statement from the Spanish team.

Tung’s Racing Engineering drive, coincidentally, marks his return to GP2 after being injured in a first corner crash at the Hungaroring earlier this year, with Romain Grosjean having replaced him at DAMS ever since.

Tung finished 15th quickest of the 24 cars in practice at Yas Marina on Friday morning.
