Jakes to race for Coloni in 2011

14 January 2011

Scuderia Coloni has announced that it has re-signed James Jakes for the 2011 GP2 season. The British driver drove for the outfit during the final two rounds of the championship last year, taking part in the sprint and feature races at Abu Dhabi. Jakes will join Michael Herck, who has been confirmed at the squad since October.

The 23-year-old was also a regular part of the GP3 Series grid in 2010, finishing eighth in the overall standings, with three podium finishes to his name. Team Principal Paolo Coloni was impressed with Jakes during his time at the squad, and was pleased to come to an agreement with the British driver for the campaign ahead.

"We already knew that he was one of the most interesting talents around, but we were amazed by his progression in Abu Dhabi," Coloni commented. "He learned a lot in the race weekend, and this proved to be very useful for the following testing session.

"Furthermore, he had an instant feeling with the team, getting along really well with the engineers and all the guys. Working together was a pleasure, and as a consequence we managed to give him a car that he really liked. Then he did the rest with some great driving, boasting a staggering pace."

Jakes added: "We had discussions with a number of other teams, but recognising the skill and enthusiasm existing at Scuderia Coloni this year, I felt they were the best option for me."
