GP2 organisers have confirmed that Davide Rigon will undergo surgery in Istanbul on Monday after his crash in Sunday’s Sprint Race. The Superleague Formula Champion, who was hit by Julián Leal’s car on the start/finish straight, was able to climb from his cockpit unaided but later medical checks have confirmed the injuries.

“We are quite shocked because Davide is very popular with everyone in the team and he is a very experienced driver,” says Team Principal Paolo Coloni. “He had the Ferrari doctor with him immediately and the damage is quite serious.

“He is already booked in for surgery tomorrow (Monday) morning and we are all concentrating on that and hoping for good success. All of our thoughts are with Davide and hopefully we will get some good news soon.”

The race was won by Stefano Coletti of Monaco, who was joined on the podium by The Netherlands' Giedo van der Garde and Britain's Sam Bird.
