France’s Jules Bianchi will start from pole position for Saturday’s GP2 Feature Race at Silverstone. On a soaking July day in England, the Lotus ART driver edged out Álvaro Parente of Carlin, with both Racing Engineering cars in the top five. Championship leader Romain Grosjean will set off from thirteenth position.
With his best effort being 1:58.531, set on the second flying lap, Bianchi is over four tenths of a second faster than the closest-challenging Portuguese. With heavier rain falling in the final minutes, all other contenders were unable to knock him off the top spot; one of the worst hit was Fabio Leimer, who ended the session some 23 seconds off the pace.
Leimer is in fact outside the 107 percent threshold, but will almost certainly be able to race thanks to his representative lap times in practice. Ocean’s Kevin Mirocha was unable to take part, though, and will sit out for the rest of the weekend due to his ongoing shoulder injury.
At the front end of the grid, Grosjean drops to 13th place due to his penalty, moving ten qualifiers up by one grid spot. This means that Britain’s Max Chilton is promoted to fifth for Carlin with Ericsson, Gutiérrez, Bird, Pic and Cecotto completing the top ten.
