GP2 championship leader Romain Grosjean led the way in the half-hour practice session at the Nürburgring on Friday afternoon. With a benchmark time of 1:40.484, the Franco-Swiss edged out Dani Clos and Jules Bianchi, with Luca Filippi – now with Coloni – fourth as Charles Pic rounded out the top five.

Amazingly, Grosjean finished the session some eight tenths of a second quicker than his closest rival and 1.2 seconds up on DAMS team-mate Pål Varhaug, who could manage no more than 24th position. There were problems for second-placed championship man Giedo van der Garde, who was only 14th after limping back to the pits with a technical problem.

Davide Valsecchi also hit trouble, running wide and collecting the wall at final corner Cola-Cola. With the exception of Clos seizing second place, there were few changes atop the listings in the final minutes. Outside the top five, reigning GP3 Champion Esteban Gutiérrez led the way from Fabio Leimer, leading Briton Jolyon Palmer, Stefano Coletti and Álvaro Parente.

On his return to the series with Super Nova, Northern Irishman Adam Carroll was 22nd and two seconds off the rapid pace of Grosjean.

GP2 Qualifying begins at 3:55pm local time (BST +1)
