GP2: Belgium 2011: Sunday race 2 results

Coloni's Luca Filippi recorded a well-earned victory during an exciting Race 2 in Belgium this morning, moving up from his fifth place starting position to cross the line 4.476 seconds ahead of Lotus ART rival Jules Bianchi. Josef Kral slipped back to third from pole, while newly-crowned Champion Romain Grosjean finished fourth.

Kral held onto his lead in the early stages, with Filippi’s storming start seeing him promptly overtake Dani Clos, Fairuz Fauzy and Johnny Cecotto Jr. The latter, who started 11th, had flown up to second on the opening lap, but worsening pace in the final half of the race would see him drop significantly down the order before the finish.

The Safety Car made another appearance at the Belgian venue when Fabio Leimer crashed at Eau Rouge, allowing Filippi to close up to the back of Kral and prepare for an attack. As soon as the race got back underway the Italian was in prime position, making a move on Kral at Les Combes en route to his second win of the season.

Bianchi progressed to second with just two laps remaining, moments after making a brilliant double overtake on Grosjean and Clos at Eau Rouge. Kral narrowly held onto fourth ahead of Grosjean, while Britain's Sam Bird was another man to find a way past an ailing Clos in the closing stages. Mexico's Esteban Gutiérrez just missed out on a point in seventh place, with Cecotto Jr. fall eventually slipping back to eighth.
