GP2: Italy 2011: Friday free practice results

Luca Filippi has topped the timesheets in GP2’s sole practice session at Monza. At a warm and bright Italian venue on Friday morning, the Coloni driver and local favourite led the way from Fabio Leimer and newly-crowned Champion Romain Grosjean.

With a best effort of 1:32.018, Filippi edged out Leimer by under a tenth of a second as less than one second covered the top 11 cars. Luiz Razia and Julián Lean, who initially traded places at the top of the listings, eventually slipped back to ninth and 22nd places for Team AirAsia and Rapax, respectively, with the latter spinning at the Roggia Chicane later in the session.

Champion Grosjean suffered a somewhat messy session and was often sideways through corners, although the Franco-Swiss avoided the gravel trap unlike Johnny Cecotto Jr, whose session ended at the Parabolica. Another casualty was Michael Herck, who ground to a halt at the Roggia in the dying seconds.

Closer to the top of the table, Frenchmen Jules Bianchi and Charles Pic rounded out the top five as Carlin’s Max Chilton led the way for British honours from sixth.

GP2 Qualifying in Italy begins at 3:55pm local time (BST +1)
