Fabio Leimer and Racing Engineering led the way on the second day of GP2’s last post-season test in Barcelona. With a best effort of 1:29.324, the Swiss was atop the timesheets from Sam Bird and Esteban Gutiérrez. The afternoon session was topped by returnee Stefano Coletti, driving for Coloni, but with a slower lap time than Leimer.
As the action began at 9 o’clock, rain threatened to dampen proceedings at a dull Circuit de Catalunya, although sunshine did break through later in the day. Leimer, remaining with Racing Engineering for a second day, was comfortably fastest by just under two tenths of a second, with Kevin Magnussen – confirmed for a full World Series by Renault season with Carlin in 2012 – helping to complete the top five with Coletti, who quickly settled back into a groove after his back-injuring crash at Spa.
American Alexander Rossi spent much of the afternoon session on top, with his eventual best time leaving him eighth quickest, with second British representative Jolyon Palmer 11th for Carlin. Formula Renault 3.5 regular Nathanaël Berthon, team-mate to Leimer for the day, was 12th with remaining Britons James Calado, Craig Dolby and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs locked together in 18th through 20th places.
Also on-track today was Albert Costa, a popular winner at the recent World Series by Renault event in Barcelona but currently without a race seat for 2012; driving for Super Nova, the local posted a best lap time of 1:30.604, which was a respectable 1.3 seconds in arrears of the pace-setter.
GP2 will be back in action for its new Finals event, taking place alongside the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix on the weekend of 12-13 November
