Britain’s James Calado has collected a career-first pole position ahead of Saturday’s GP2 Feature Race in Barcelona. The Lotus driver will share the front row with Switzerland’s Fabio Leimer, with championship leader Davide Valsecchi seventh.
As rivals’ general pace only worsened over the latter half of qualifying Calado, who hails from Worcester, sealed the top spot with a total of only six laps and a personal best effort of 1:30.655, edging out Leimer by a comfortable two tenths of a second. Stephane Richelmi of Monaco and second Briton Max Chilton fill the Row 2 spots.
With Caterham Formula 1 reserve driver Giedo van der Garde rounding out the top five, 2012 title contenders Valsecchi and Luiz Razia are poised for dramatic races from only seventh and 13th on the grid. Jolyon Palmer confirms that all three English drivers are in the top ten, with his personal placing of ninth for iSport.
Saturday’s race promises to be hot in more senses than one, with forecasters predicting ambient temperatures of 32°C (90°F) around the Catalan capital.
Saturday’s Feature Race starts after F1 qualifying, at 3:40pm local time (BST +1)
