Fabio Leimer has qualified on pole for Saturday’s GP2 Feature Race at Silverstone. On Friday afternoon, the Swiss Racing Engineering driver set a wet lap time of 2:01.889, which was a full second quicker than nearest challenger Johnny Cecotto.

With dark skies and low track temperatures, it was an unpleasant session for general viewing but a delightful one for Leimer. Highest placed Briton Jolyon Palmer managed third position in front of his home crowd, with Monaco’s Stefano Coletti fourth on the day Coloni announced that it will be withdrawing from GP2 at the end of the 2012 season.

Championship leader Davide Valsecchi was first out of the pits, but was caught out by the situation and managed a final position of only 12th, behind DAMS team-mate and reigning British F3 Champion Felipe Nasr. Luiz Razia, who sits just one point behind Valsecchi in the title race, will start ninth and three places ahead of his adversary.

There was good news for the crowd, many of whom were disappointed by the lack of running in F1 practice, as James Calado and Max Chilton wound up sixth and eighth.

GP2’s Silverstone Feature Race begins at 2:40pm local time (BST) on Saturday
