7 July 2012 – Esteban Gutiérrez raced to victory at Silverstone in changeable conditions for the British GP2 Series feature race. The Mexican, who is reserve driver for the Sauber team, took the win after a knightmare strategy for Fabio Leimer cost the Swiss driver a potential victory and became an eventual 15th place finish.
The race began behind the safety car which saw Daniel de Jong crash into the back of Caterham’s Rodolfo Gonzalez. The race finally got underway after six laps as pole sitter Liemer led the pack.
Leimer pulled out a lead before Britain’s James Calado came to a halt with a loose wheel from an earlier pitstop. The stricken Lotus GP, parked in turn one, caused the safety car to be deployed.
With a pitstop being mandatory in the feature race, the field all dived into the pits to take advantage of the safety car period, except for race leader Leimer. A quick stop from the Lotus team helped Gutierrez take the lead from Johnny Cecotto Jr and Jolyon Palmer.
Leimer driver finally came into the pits whilst the Coloni car of Stefano Coletti was recovered, bringing out the safety car yet again, the Italian driver losing control at Becketts on slick tyres.
Davide Valsecchi took advantage of the safety car periods, with an early pitstop helping him to seventh behind his team-mate Felipe Nasr.
The race finished with Gutiérrez winning from Cecotto by nearly two seconds, with Palmer taking a podium finish in his home race.
A fifth place for Luiz Razia helped the Brazilian to take a three point lead from Valsecchi into tomorrow's sprint race.
