The Netherland’s Giedo van der Garde has clinched pole position for Saturday’s GP2 Feature Race in Germany, having qualified in the rain on Friday. The Caterham F1 reserve driver will share the front row with Switzerland’s Fabio Leimer. Briton James Calado had qualified second but drops further down the grid with a ten-place penalty.
Following the second F1 practice session, GP2 hit the track for half an hour. Van der Garde enjoyed the top spot with his best effort of 1:44.022, which was quickest by just 12 thousandths of a second. Leimer ended his session in the Sachs Kurve gravel trap, which had already been visited by Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo earlier in the day.
Row 2 will consist of Nigel Melker, who confirms two Dutch drivers in the top three, and Fabio Onidi. The championship battle will start from fifth, with Davide Valsecchi backed up by DAMS team-mate and reigning British Formula 3 Champion Felipe Nasr. Title leader Luiz Razia, driving for Christian Horner’s Arden team, will set off from eighth.
More rain is expected at Hockenheim on Saturday.
Saturday’s Feature Race begins at 3:40pm local time (BST +1)
