Esteban Gutiérrez, reserve driver for the Sauber Formula 1 team, has won the first Pirelli Tyre Management award for this year’s GP2 season. The prize was presented to the Mexican at the GP2 prize-giving ceremony in Paris on Friday night.
The GP3 Champion of 2010 picked up the gong after being judged as the driver to have used his tyres in the best way across the latest GP2 campaign. The decision was made by a 50-strong panel made up of Formula 1 and GP2 journalists.
“We are extremely happy with the jury’s vote to give Esteban the prize,” said Mario Isola, Pirelli’s racing manager. “Our philosophy behind the GP2 tyre design this year was to help prepare young drivers for Formula 1 by giving them the opportunity to learn how to maximize the capabilities of our compounds. Esteban grasped the principles of tyre management right from the start of the season, demonstrating the sensitivity to tyres that we already saw from him in GP3.”
Gutiérrez will be running with Sauber at next month’s Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi and is tipped by many to be promoted to a race seat ahead of 2013.
