Ericsson takes pole for Feature Race
10 May 2013 – Marcus Ericsson has claimed pole position for Saturday afternoon’s Feature Race at the Circuit de Catalunya, overcoming a late charge from fellow DAMS driver Stéphane Richelmi in qualifying. The Swede posted a time of 1:28.706 to lead his team-mate by 0.165 seconds, while practice pace-setter Felipe Nasr completed the top three.
Although the rain stayed away, there was a mad dash to leave the pit lane as the session began, with dark clouds looming. Ericsson, who held a massive advantage over his rivals in the final sector, led after the first set of runs, but was forced to produce a much quicker effort when Richelmi surged to the front in the late stages.
Carlin driver Nasr and Russian Time's Sam Bird were high-profile names to suffer in the technical final sector, the pair ultimately having to settle for third and fourth on the grid. Championship leader Stefano Coletti wound up fifth after a mistake at Turn 10 hindered his chances, with chief rival Fabio Leimer in close company.
James Calado and Robin Frijns will share the fourth row, just ahead of final top ten runners Kevin Ceccon and Kevin Giovesi. Remaining Britons Jolyon Palmer, Jon Lancaster and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs ended up 11th, 15th and 25th respectively.
Saturday afternoon's Feature Race gets underway at 2.55pm local time (GMT +2)
