Bird claims Monza pole, cuts points gap
6 September 2013 – Sam Bird has moved to within 10 points of the GP2 championship lead after claiming pole position for Saturday's Feature Race at Monza. The Russian Time driver lapped the venue in 1:31.788 to beat Racing Engineering's Fabio Leimer by 0.034 seconds.
The first half of the session was topped by practice pace-setter Jolyon Palmer, but a mistake at the Ascari hindered his final lap, and he had to settle for third. DAMS pilot Marcus Ericsson did just enough to join his Carlin rival on the second row of the grid.
Tom Dillmann ensured that both Russian Time machines featured inside the top five, the Frenchman edging out championship leader Stefano Coletti. Seventh went to a determined Dani Clos, with James Calado claiming eighth after his morning Formula 1 duties. Felipe Nasr was the biggest loser of the title contenders, struggling to 14th.
The session featured two significant incidents at Parabolica. The first saw Sergio Canamasas spin into the gravel trap upon entry, before Vittorio Ghirelli lost control at the exit, ultimately bringing out the red flags to allow the track surface to be cleaned.
Saturday's Feature Race at Monza gets underway at 2.40pm local time (GMT +2)
