Leimer: Strong start took pressure off
2 November 2013 – Fabio Leimer says a strong start to Saturday afternoon's GP2 Feature Race coupled with chief title rival Sam Bird stalling "took off the pressure" in his quest to claim the 2013 crown, a target he ultimately achieved by coming home in fourth position.
The Racing Engineering driver, who started on the Option tyre, lost the final podium spot to Marcus Ericsson in the closing stages of the race, but his points haul was still enough to put Bird, who crossed the line in 10th, mathematically out of the running.
"I think we can be really happy with today," explained Leimer. "We were lucky Sam Bird stalled on the grid, which helped us a lot. We knew we had to finish at the front to take the title. The start was good and I was almost into the lead. It took off the pressure as I wanted to finish the race, which was quite long today.
"I was already sure that I could finish on the podium as I manage tyres very well. But the second Safety Car allowed Ericsson to close in on me on soft tyres. I knew I needed to finish P4."
Leimer, who is contesting his fourth full season in the feeder category, also paid tribute to the Racing Engineering workforce for their efforts throughout the year.
"I would like to thank the team for the great job this season," he said. "We never had any technical issues and the engineers always worked hard on putting the best car on track. Me and the team did a good job and we deserve to win the championship."
With one race to run, Leimer has three wins and three further podiums to his name.
