Evans tops first practice session of 2014
4 April 2014 – Russian Time driver Mitch Evans topped the opening practice session of the 2014 GP2 campaign.
Although free practice has been extended by 15 minutes this season, with an extra set of the harder Prime tyre available, most drivers refrained from posting early laps after their mileage at the venue in pre-season testing.
When the on track action stepped up a gear, it was initially Campos Racing's Arthur Pic who set the pace, before Mitch Evans surged clear with his best effort of 1:42.062, which would remain the benchmark until the end.
McLaren protege Stoffel Vandoorne and Ferrari youngster Raffaele Marciello took second and third for their respective ART and Racing Engineering teams, while Hilmer Motorsport's Daniel Abt completed the top four.
Stéphane Richelmi (DAMS) took fifth, ahead of Rio Haryanto (Caterham) and André Negrão (Arden).
Jolyon Palmer, one of the pre-season favourites after testing, finished eighth in his DAMS machine, edging out Simon Trummer (Rapax) and Conor Daly, who sealed a last-minute deal with Lazarus for the Bahrain weekend.
Qualifying at the Bahrain International Circuit gets underway at 8pm local time (GMT +3)
