22 June 2014 – Johnny Cecotto Jr. soaked up the pressure from several rivals to win Sunday's GP2 Sprint race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Cecotto Jr. took the lead at the start and repelled the advances of first Alexander Rossi, then Raffaele Marciello and Stefano Coletti to win by less than a second.
Coletti finished as runner-up, with Ferrari youngster Marciello on the podium again after finishing third.
Rossi and Mitch Evans bogged down from the front row of the grid, allowing Cecotto Jr into the lead. Rossi retained second place, ahead of Marciello and Coletti. As the field bunched up at Turn two Nasr sustained minor front wing damage and he ultimately retired, albeit with clutch damage.
Coletti briefly got ahead of Marciello but the Italian was rapid as he quickly usurped his team-mate before passing Rossi with a bold move up the inside of Turn 2.
Marciello got the gap to race leader Cecotto Jr. down to half a second but he soon slipped back, eventually ceding position to Coletti, who had earlier got through on Rossi. Evans also dispatched the Caterham driver while Palmer hung onto the back of the group following a fantastic scrap with Julián Leal.
Once clear of Marciello, Coletti slashed the gap to Cecotto Jr. with a handful of laps remaining and spent the final few minutes all over the back of the Trident driver but was ultimately unable to make a move stick.
Evans twice dived up the inside of Marciello at Turn 3 but on both occasions the latter retained the advantage on the exit to claim his second successive podium.
Evans finished fourth, ahead of Rossi, Palmer, Leal and Takuya Izawa.
The fifth round of the GP2 season takes place at Silverstone on the weekend of July 5-6
