Vandoorne claims back-to-back GP2 poles
5 September 2014 – McLaren young driver Stoffel Vandoorne claimed pole position for the GP2 Feature Race at Monza after setting the fastest time during qualifying in cloudy conditions.
Vandoorne trailed Arthur Pic for much of the session but a late lap enabled him to jump ahead of the Campos driver and claim four vital points as he attempts to close in on championship leader Jolyon Palmer.
Vandoorne's 1:31.707 put him 0.219s of Pic as he notched up back-to-back poles, with Mitch Evans third.
Palmer was fourth for DAMS, while Ferrari protege Raffaele Marciello finished in fifth place.
Simon Trummer netted sixth, ahead of Stéphane Richelmi and Palmer's closest title rival, Felipe Nasr.
Julián Leal and André Negrão rounded out the top 10 positions.
Saturday's GP2 Feature Race at Monza begins at 15:40 local time (GMT +2)
