Vandoorne takes pole in thrilling session
10 October 2014 – Stoffel Vandoorne and Arthur Pic set identical times during GP2 qualifying in Sochi, with the ART driver claiming his third consecutive pole position on account of posting the lap first.
Vandoorne clocked a 1:45.402 to take top spot, with Campos rival Pic matching his time mere seconds later. Due to his lap coming earlier, the Belgian earns the position and takes the four points that go with it.
Takuya Izawa was a surprise third in the second ART machine, having been a frontrunner throughout the session. The Japanese driver had never qualified higher than 16th place but was on course for pole position until he slithered wide at the final corner.
Championship leader Jolyon Palmer could manage only fourth after the DAMS driver encountered a slower car through the final corner, while Racing Engineering's Raffaele Marciello was fifth.
Mitch Evans was sixth for home team Russian Time, ahead of Kimiya Sato (Campos) and Stefano Coletti (Racing Engineering), who recovered from early contact with Carlin's Felipe Nasr at the final corner.
Andre Negrão was ninth for Arden, while Nasr salvaged 10th place.
Saturday's GP2 Feature Race at Sochi Autodrom begins at 16:40 local time (GMT +4)
