Latifi controls Sprint Race for first F2 win
16 July 2017 – Nicholas Latifi secured his maiden Formula 2 victory with an accomplished performance in the Sprint Race at Silverstone.
Latifi surged clear of Luca Ghiotto and survived a final lap restart, following a Safety Car period, to finally mount the top step, having taken four podiums already this season.
Ghiotto followed home in second place while Artem Markelov took third, passing Oliver Rowland on the final lap.
Rowland already carried a time penalty after he was judged to have forced Markelov onto the grass along the Wellington Straight on the opening lap, having come close to contact with Jordan King approaching Aintree.
The Safety Car phase skewered Rowland's hopes of minimising the penalty, and he was bizarrely caught napping at the restart, dropping five seconds to nearest opponent Ghiotto.
Stewards are currently investigating the aforementioned restart.
Rowland's sanction demoted him to 10th position, leaving Sergio Canamasas in fourth, after the Spaniard put in a super pass on title leader Charles Leclerc into Club on the last lap.
Leclerc's fifth place, combined with the fastest lap, nonetheless enabled the youngster to stretch his title advantage to 67 points, over new nearest rival Markelov.
Norman Nato took sixth, while Nyck de Vries surged from the back of the grid to seventh place, gaining a whopping nine positions on the opening lap alone.
Nobuharu Matsushita rounded out the points-paying positions in eighth place, profiting from a spin for Sean Gelael at the restart.
1. Charles Leclerc - 188 points
2. Artem Markelov - 121 points
3. Oliver Rowland - 117 points
The next round of the season will take place at the Hungaroring from July 28-30
