Rahal ready to go at St. Pete

2 April 2009

Graham Rahal is raring to go ahead of this weekend's first race of the IRL season. The 20-year-old will be keen to make an immediate impression at the start of his all-important second year, having moved from the now defunct Champcar series at the end of the 2007 championship.

"I really am looking forward to going to St. Pete as the past winner," the Newman/Haas/Lanigan driver said, having won the event last year at the age of 19 years and 93 days. "It was a great win for me, not only because it was my first but also because it was my first race in the IndyCar Series. It's incredible to win a race but for it to be your first, and to take the record as the youngest winner, was truly amazing! Selfishly, I hope the record stands for a long time. But now you look ahead and I want to get more wins - one win is important to me and important to my career, but I want to have many more."

Winning is something the NHL team know all about, having already achived 107 victories from their 26 seasons of competition so far, with 11 of them in season-opening races. "It does increase the expectations," Graham, son of former racer Bobby, continued. "It would be great to win two years in a row; that's the idea we're going there with - I want to defend my win and that's what we're going to try and do. It was exciting to have so many guys behind me that I looked up to for so long, and to go and win against them was a dream come true. I have been watching them for many years and to even be in a situation to dice it out with them was thrilling. I look forward to doing it again!"
