Danica Patrick was pleased to have taken eighteen places in the race at Long Beach, having finished fourth for Andretti Green Racing. The only female driver in the field, Patrick now has 44 points and is in the top ten of the drivers' championship after disappointing start to the year in St. Petersburg.
2009's challenge kicked off in a bad way for Danica a fortnight ago, after a collision with Raphael Matos resulted in a heavy crash and retirement. "It was a good job on the strategy and getting that right," she said of this weekend. "We pitted at the right times. If the yellows would have fallen just right, we'd have had the lead, and there was just no passing out there. Unfortunately, I made a little mistake and Will Power got by and then Tony Kanaan."
Despite the extremely strong showing from 22nd at the start, Patrick's real strengths tend to show better on oval venues, the first of which on this year's calendar will be the tri-oval Kansas Speedway for the next round this weekend. "I'm really proud of how we all kept our heads down and made a result out of it, instead of getting down," Patrick concluded at Long Beach.
