Castroneves leads Penske 1-2-3 in second practice
25 July 2009 – Penske improved from all-top four results to lock out the first three places with their cars at Edmonton on Friday. Helio Castroneves topped the timesheets in second practice ahead of team-mates Ryan Briscoe and Will Power, who was quickest in the first session.
Brazil's Castroneves led the way in the second session in Canada with a best lap time of 1.01.567 on his final tour. Raphael Matos completed a good day for the Luczo Dragon team by making the top five again with leading Briton Mike Conway an impressive sixth for Dreyer & Reinbold.
There was more drama further pack in the pack, though, as Dan Wheldon halted proceedings early on with a Turn 3 crash; the nasty accident involved Danica Patrick as the Englishman bounced back into the track off the nearside wall, damaging both cars in the process. Ryan Hunter-Reay was in the wars again with a spin and stoppage at Turn 4 as Tomas Scheckter lost control and shunted his car at Turn 7.
Championship leader Dario Franchitti wound up in a perhaps unlucky 13th position but only after the session included an off-track moment for the Scot as well.
