As the three championship contenders locked out the podium at Mid-Ohio's Lexington round on Sunday, Ryan Hunter-Reay drove to a highly impressive fourth position for the A.J. Foyt team, holding off Hideki Mutoh who finished less than half a second behind for Andretti Green.
With Hunter-Reay coming under immense pressure from the Japanese driver in the last knockings of the race, the American's climb from seventh at the start had been a successful one. "We were able to gap anybody out there and we were holding with the leaders," reported a proud Hunter-Reay. "We were pretty happy with that."
Having out-qualified 11th placed Mutoh by over four tenths of a second on Saturday, varying strategies allowed the latter to shadow the A.J. Foyt car right to the chequered flag on Sunday. "At the end, Hideki was fast," Ryan recalled.
"He was really pushing me hard and I was driving as hard as I could to stay up ahead of him. A fourth for this team right now is a big deal. A fourth for me right now is a big deal. We were catching third, it was a lot of fun."
