Information on the injuries of Nelson Philippe and Will Power has been provided following their serious accident at the Infineon Speedway on Saturday. The coming together took place during practice at Sears Point and saw both drivers evacuated to hospital from the circuit.
The heavy shunt occurred when the Conquest Racing car of Philippe, who had returned to IndyCars this weekend, spun twice to come to rest on the blind crest at the top of the hill; as E.J. Viso's HVM machine dodged past the stricken Frenchman, an unsighted Power's Penske piled directly into the stationary car at high speed to inflict massive amounts of damage.
Both men suffered from concussion but were awake in the circuit's medical centre before Philippe left by ambulance and Power by helicopter.
Reports now confirm that Power has broken two vertebra and will remain in hospital for at least one night as a result. Philippe has picked up a fracture to his left leg after the sickening t-bone shunt at Turn 3a.
"He (Power) knows the difference between his big toes and little toes," Penske president Tim Cindric commented. "He is able to move all of them and was lifting his legs up. He was unconscious when they got to him, so he does have concussion, but he was awake, alert and talking when they took him out."
