Conway fastest in Sunday warm-up

23 August 2009

Britain's Mike Conway led the way in Sunday's warm-up session ahead of Round 14 of the championship at Sears Point. The Dreyer & Reinbold driver topped the timesheets ahead of Graham Rahal at the Sonoma track with pole man Dario Franchitti seventh in the leading Target Chip Ganassi car.

With Franchitti already qualified on pole position ahead of the race at the Infineon Raceway, the Scot was left just ahead of 2005 Champion Dan Wheldon as Conway controlled proceedings at the top of the final classification courtesy of a 1:17.462 lap time. Rahal wound up only 49 thousandths of a second slower as Ryan Briscoe led the way for Penske.

Mario Moraes' KV Racing machine set a lap time quick enough for the top five as Oriol Servia's Newman/Haas/Lanigan completed that particular group. The second Penske of Helio Castroneves confirmed the team's speed as both drivers achieved top six places.

Reigning Champion and current leader in the standings Scott Dixon was ninth in the second Target car although it was Richard Antinucci who circulated the most times with 21 laps under the belt of the Team 3G pilot.
