Mike Conway impressed by picking up his first ever IndyCar Series podium finish at the Infineon Raceway on Sunday. Finishing only eight tenths of a second behind race winner Dario Franchitti and sixth tenths behind Ryan Briscoe, the Dreyer & Reinbold driver completed a strong drive after being involved in the first lap multiple collision.
With a fifth row slot translating into a rostrum result in California, Conway's first visit to the Indy rostrum was one which raised eyebrows in Sonoma County. "Yeah, it was good," said the 2009 rookie. "At the beginning we got hit from behind and I got a puncture to my rear tyre - I thought my race was finished."
After making an emergency pit-stop, the Bromley driver picked off car after car. "I just kept pushing all the way and just kept moving forward and setting quick times," he continued. "Towards the end, I knew I might be able to get past the guys in front. The Tran Systems car was really well today; if we had a few more laps, it would have been interesting to see if I could get past those guys."
