Andretti encouraged by strong showing

Andretti encouraged by strong showing

12 April 2010

Marco Andretti was pleased with the performance of the Andretti Autosport team as he raced to a top five result at Barber on Sunday. However, had the late-rate caution arrived a handful of laps earlier, the American could have been celebrating his first IndyCar victory since 2006.

With those behind him adopting a considered approach and saving fuel, Andretti bolted ahead but was presented with no option but to give up his lead when pitting for a last refill of fuel late in the race.

"We have to be happy to put the Venom car into the top five, especially after our finishes on road courses last year," the 23-year-old commented. "I think we maybe could have stretched out each of our stints a bit longer and gained on fuel one lap at a time.

"Helio (Castroneves) just went longer than us each time and that was the difference in the end - he was able to go that much farther and we fell short. Now we just have to keep marching forward; the four of us (drivers) are working together to keep improving our cars but we're still a bit off pace.

"Overall, I think this shows we're on the right track."
