Reigning Champion Dario Franchitti led the way as the first of three weekend practice sessions was held at Edmonton on Friday morning, with this weekend’s round marking the second Canadian race in a double-header which began with Toronto last week.
With Alberta’s capital city welcoming the IndyCar Series once again, spectators were unfortunate not to see a great amount of track action from the quickest cars until the final 20 minutes, with the Target Chip Ganassi man eventually registering the best lap time of 1:03.088.
Behind, team-mate Scott Dixon was just eight hundredths of a second slower as Penske pairing Will Power and Helio Castroneves kept up the team symmetry in third and fourth spots. Local favourite Paul Tracy was as delighted as the crowds to manage sixth, with Justin Wilson flying the second flag for Britain in the top five.
However, red flags flew twice during the hour; first for Milka Duno, whose Dale Coyne car – an enormous 12.1 seconds off the leading pace – hit the Turn 10 tyre wall and then as World Series by Renault Champion Bertrand Baguette lost the Conquest, to spin out of control and through an advertising banner.
Takuma Sato was also a cause for excitement as his KV Racing machine, which finished just behind team-mate E.J. Viso and tenth on the timesheets, ran through a puddle – following overnight rain – and drenched the Japanese driver in the process.
Practice 2 begins at 2:45pm local time (BST -7)
