Dixon wins amid controversy at Edmonton

25 July 2010

Ganassi’s Scott Dixon has picked up his second win of the IndyCar season but only following much controversy at Edmonton; the 2008 Champion was handed the top spot when original race winner Helio Castroneves was demoted due to blocking.

The situation stems back to earlier in the weekend, when during the drivers’ briefing all were reminded that blocking – holding the inside line when defending – is against the sporting regulations of the championship.

Power led Castroneves in a Penske 1-2 at the start as team-mate Ryan Briscoe soon made it a 1-2-3 for Roger’s team, passing the Ganassi cars of Dixon and reigning Champion Dario Franchitti before they duly retook the positions during pit-stops.

Following the last stops on the runway track, Castroneves began to rapidly reel in team-mate and current championship leader Power at the top of the race, with Will on the more durable but less grippy black compound tyres and Helio on the softer, quicker reds. The Brazilian then passed the Australian in a clean Turn 1 move, beginning to pull away towards victory with 19 laps remaining.

Further back, the Andretti Autosport of Tony Kanaan rose to an eventual finishing position of 12th from the back of the grid, despite touching the Fazzt car of Alex Tagliani – at his second home race in a week – and forcing the Canadian into Mario Romancini’s Conquest, with both men retiring on the spot.

Other home man Paul Tracy managed to recover to an impressive sixth to lead the way for KV Racing although there were problems for Dreyer & Reinbold, as both Justin Wilson and Tomas Scheckter were forced to pit for suspension repairs. HVM’s Simona de Silvestro was also highly disappointed after running seventh and fighting for sixth before being shunted by E.J. Viso’s KV car – a recovery drive to 11th proved to be all to no avail for Simona, as her car later broke down.

At the front, a final yellow period had seen Castroneves’ lead diminish as Power set off on a final attack of his team-mate in the final laps; however, a crucial point of the race arrived at Turn 1 as, forced to attack on the outside line, the Australian lost momentum and was consequently forced to give up second place to Dixon.

Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed by race stewards that Castroneves had indeed broken the rules, with the Brazilian highly enraged and upset in the cockpit as a result. At the finish, Helio drove over the line although the chequered flag was instead waved at second-placed Dixon, who was declared the winner.

Round 12 of 17 in 2010 will be staged at Lexington on 8 August

In the minutes after the race at Edmonton, Castroneves could be seen furiously shouting and gesticulating at IZOD race officials, held back by team members after being demoted to tenth. A video recap of the situation can be viewed below:
