IndyCar championship leader Will Power was delighted to pick up victory number eight of 2010 on Sunday as he crossed the line first at Sonama’s Infineon Raceway, the venue at which the Australian suffered a back-breaking practice accident 12 months ago.
Having qualified on pole position, the Penske driver led by as much as eight seconds although Will eventually suffered maximum pressure from 2008 title winner Scott Dixon, who finished second and just seven tenths behind.
With the red and black tyre compounds throwing several variables into the mix, the New Zealander – on the harder, black type – closely followed the Penske past the chequered flag due to a late-race caution period.
Erstwhile championship leader and current Champion Dario Franchitti managed to claim the final podium spot, two seconds ahead of Ryan Briscoe whose Penske ran ahead of the Ganassi cars before losing out at the final rounds of pit-stops.
Former Formula 1 pilot Takuma Sato continued his bruising season further down the field, first being in the vicinity of a collision between Raphael Matos and Bertrand Baguette before his Lotus-liveried KV Racing car finished 18th after coming together with a livid Danica Patrick’s Andretti Autosport machine in the closing stages.
With Franchitti in third, British compatriots Justin Wilson and Alex Lloyd rounded out the race in sixth and tenth places for Dreyer & Reinbold and Dale Coyne, respectively.
