Castroneves ends Barber test quickest
15 March 2011 – After Will Power led the way as the Barber Motorsports Park test began on Monday, Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves has now topped the timesheets ahead of this year’s IndyCar Series season, which begins in St. Petersburg at the weekend.
Setting the best example with a leading lap time of 1:11.943, the Brazilian edged out Power by just two hundredths of a second as Ganassi’s 2008 Champion Scott Dixon, Penske’s third car of Ryan Briscoe and the Newman/Haas of Oriol Servia completed the top five.
Behind, ex Formula 1 racer Takuma Sato was the leading KV Racing machine in sixth from Hinchcliffe, Andretti, leading Briton Justin Wilson and Hunter-Reay. Further down the field, other Englishmen Mike Conway and James Jakes ended proceedings 16th and 21st for Andretti Autosport and Dale Coyne, respectively.
“My team-mates, they are two great talents, pushing each other,” said Castroneves. “But I’m glad we were able to put the number three up at the top at the end of the day. Our goal as a team is to finish 1-2-3 every race. We want to accomplish what we’ve failed to do the last three years: win the championship.”
