Power seizes Long Beach pole
16 April 2011 – Will Power has earned the right to start Sunday's 85-lap Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach from pole position, with the Australian driver putting in a late effort of 1:09.064 to edge out local favourite Ryan Hunter-Reay in qualifying this afternoon. Mike Conway set a time fast enough for third on the grid, earning a somewhat unexpected result for the Andretti Autosport squad.
Oriol Servià was able to make amends for his crash in the final practice session of the weekend, as he secured fourth just behind Conway. Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's Justin Wilson was just over one tenth a adrift of a place in the top four, while Hélio Castroneves ended his time behind the wheel on Saturday afternoon as the second fastest Penske driver in sixth place.
Reigning Champion Dario Franchitti had to settle for seventh at the end of the session, with Target Chip Ganassi Racing team-mate Scott Dixon narrowly behind. Canada's Alex Tagliani and KV Racing's Tony Kanaan completed the top ten, with Ryan Briscoe having to make do with 12th. Takuma Sato was the only man to crash, meaning he will start the race from 22nd.
Sunday’s race begins at 1:30pm local time (BST -8)
