De Silvestro suffers huge Indy accident
20 May 2011 – Simona de Silvestro has been involved in the first accident of this year’s Indianapolis 500 event sessions, with the HVM driver having sustained a significant impact in Thursday’s practice session.
After encountering a suspected mechanical problem at Turn 3, the car suffered two heavy impacts with the retaining wall before becoming airborne twice and landing inverted while on fire. The incident resulted in a long halt to the action as the catch fencing was repaired.
After being able to climb from the car unassisted, de Silvestro has been submitted to hospital with what are being described by local media outlets as minor burns.
