IndyCar Series: Texas Motor Speedway: Friday first free practice results

Will Power set the fastest time during first practice at the Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, leading Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe by a margin of 0.016 seconds around the 1.5-mi (2.4-km) oval venue. The pair finished marginally ahead of 2010 Rookie of the Year Alex Lloyd, while the 30-strong field was separated by little more than half a second after 45 minutes of track action.

Panther Racing's J.R. Hildebrand narrowly missed out on a spot inside the top three, with the American driver eager to move on from his last-lap disaster at the Indy 500 last month. Reigning IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti grabbed fifth for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, just two thousandths of a second ahead of Ed Carpenter who finished ninth during his last IndyCar race at the venue in 2009.

Indy 500 pole-sitter Alex Tagliani was next up, while KV Racing’s Tony Kanaan edged out fellow Brazilian Hélio Castroneves for eighth. Justin Wilson followed closely for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, stealing the final top ten spot from Takuma Sato.

Qualifying begins at 3.45pm local time (BST -6)
