Alex Tagliani will start from pole position for the first of two races at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, with the Canadian edging out his rivals courtesy of another strong qualifying performance. In a repeat of his achievement at Indianapolis last month, the 38-year-old will lead the pack away ahead of reigning Champion Dario Franchitti, while Penske driver Will Power had to settle for third.
Another pleasant afternoon at the Fort Worth venue allowed for the field to battle for pole without any weather concerns, but there were some surprises up and down the field. Behind Tagliani, who completed his run with an average speed of 215.186mph, Takuma Sato claimed a well-earned fourth for KV Racing after a strong two-lap attempt from the Japanese runner.
Ed Carpenter will start from fifth place, just ahead of Sato’s team-mate Tony Kanaan, while Scott Dixon put his Ganassi machine inside the top ten for the first time this weekend. Albeit over 1mph slower than his Sam Schmidt team-mate, Wade Cunningham claimed a promising eighth in the team’s second car, just ahead of Ryan Briscoe and Danica Patrick.
Practice 2 begins at 6.45pm local time (BST -6)
