Franchitti sets early Iowa pace
24 June 2011 – Reigning Champion Dario Franchitti topped the timesheets during first practice for this weekend’s Iowa Corn Indy 250, fresh from his third victory of the season in Wisconsin last Sunday. The Ganassi driver set a time of 17.741 seconds around the 0.894-mi (1.438-km) oval venue, edging out an in-form Takuma Sato, while New Zealander team-mate Scott Dixon completed the top three runners.
Conditions were pleasant as the green-light came on at the end of the pit lane, leading to a total of 1645 laps being amassed by the 25 cars on-track. Andretti Autosport’s American representatives were best of the rest behind Dixon, with both Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti performing well throughout the session.
Joint championship leader Will Power was next up for Penske, just over a tenth behind title-rival and pace-setter Franchitti, while Mike Conway registered the seventh fastest time at the wheel of his Andretti machine. Hélio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe and Tony Kanaan grabbed the final positions inside the top ten.
Qualifying begins at 4.15pm local time (BST -6)
