KV Racing's Takuma Sato claimed pole position for the Honda Indy Edmonton on Saturday afternoon, carrying over his strong practice form to seal the top spot. The Japanese driver will start just ahead of 2010 runner-up Will Power, with Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti forming an all-Ganassi second row.
After comfortably making it through to the Fast Six, Sato fought off significant pressure from Penske rival Power who had grabbed pole at every non-oval event so far this year. The ex-Formula 1 pilot posted a time of 1:18.516 to jump to the top of the timesheets, leaving Power to settle for second place by just 0.050 seconds.
Behind Dixon and Franchitti in the final qualifying phase, E.J. Viso and Ryan Briscoe brought up the rear with efforts that were not strong enough to challenge for pole. Ryan Hunter-Reay was the fastest of the Round 2 eliminees ahead of Oriol Servià, while Hélio Castroneves and James Hinchcliffe completed the top ten.
Sunday's race begins at 11.45am local time (BST -8)
