Ganassi’s Graham Rahal set the pace during Friday’s opening free practice session at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, topping the timesheets with an effort of 1:09.603. The American driver led E.J. Viso by 49 thousandths of a second as the chequered flag came out, while championship leader Dario Franchitti completed the top three.
Pleasant conditions welcomed the drivers for this weekend’s first practie phase, with the field all eager to get up to speed ahead of qualifying. Edmonton victor Will Power was next up behind Franchitti at the end of the 75 minute session, placing his Penske machine ahead of Britain’s Justin Wilson and Newman/Haas pilot James Hinchcliffe.
New Zealander Scott Dixon ended up seventh fastest with the final sub 1:10.000 effort of the afternoon, edging ahead of Andretti man Ryan Hunter-Reay as the on-track action concluded. Ryan Briscoe and Hélio Castroneves rounded out a top ten covered by just 0.599 seconds, while Marco Andretti and Takuma Sato featured at the bottom of the timesheets after spending most of the session in their respective garages.
