Ryan Hunter-Reay topped a practice session marred by Justin Wilson’s late crash at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this morning, with the latter being carefully extracted from his car after crashing at the first corner. As the session concluded, Hunter-Reay held his place at the top of the order ahead of Scott Dixon and Takuma Sato.
Will Power was best of the rest in fourth once again, edging out Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe and Dario Franchitti. Wilson was set to join his rivals inside the top ten, but an accident with just four minutes to go ended his chances and has left him with potential injuries. After clipping the barrier at Turn 1, the Dreyer & Reinbold man ground to a halt at the second corner and was later removed from his car for medical checks.
After a flurry of track activity, J.R. Hildebrand held onto seventh for Panther Racing, placing his car just in front of Canada’s Alex Tagliani as the chequered flag fell. The latter, who has recently been placed on probation by the IndyCar stewards, managed to grab eighth ahead of fellow top ten runners Graham Rahal and Tony Kanaan.
Qualifying begins at 12.55pm local time (BST -5)
