Dario Franchitti led the way in the opening practice session at the Infineon Raceway, host of this weekend’s IndyCar Series round for Sears Point. The Scottish Ganassi driver, whose best effort came in the form of 1:19.427, edged out Penske duo Will Power and Helio Castroneves.
Following the high drama of New Hampshire, Castroneves led early doors, with Power then making his presence known with approximately 30 minutes of the session to go; Franchitti’s late effort moved him ahead by just over a tenth.
Franchitti’s team-mate Scott Dixon was fourth ahead of impressive championship debutant Giorgio Pantano and Sébastien Bourdais.
The returning Ho-Pin Tung was 17th quickest of the 28 entrants, with Alex Tagliani’s Sam Schmidt car grounded to the sidelines after clouting the barriers at Turn 3.
