Martin Plowman took advantage of softer rubber to post the fastest time during the second practice session of the weekend at Sonoma, lapping the 2.22-mi (3.57-km) Infineon Raceway in a time of 1:19.035. The Sam Schmidt driver led fellow Briton Dario Franchitti by four thousandths of a second, while Will Power claimed third.
The full field made the most of the final 60 minutes of practice before this afternoon's qualifying session to fine tune their cars, with the only drama coming in the form of a late Ana Beatriz spin. J.R. Hildebrand was best of the rest behind Power, with James Jakes and Scott Dixon finishing narrowly behind the American on the timing screens.
Ryan Briscoe placed the second of three Penske cars in seventh place, just ahead of Sebastian Saavedra and Mike Conway. Brazil's Hélio Castroneves completed the top ten, while series newcomer Ho-Pin Tung finished a promising 11th.
