2008 IndyCar Champion Scott Dixon topped the timesheets as the second practice session took place at Motegi on Saturday morning. With a best lap time of 1:38.771, he edged out championship-leading team-mate Dario Franchitti by just under three tenths of a second as a pair of Penskes followed in third and fourth.
Power, following up from his Friday form, led the way before Franchitti was the first Ganassi car to move ahead. Dixon’s best effort then came in the closing stages, bumping the two title contenders down to second and third places. A small late improvement from Power allowed him to stay ahead of team-mate Ryan Briscoe.
To the delight of the Japanese crowd, Hideki Mutoh managed fifth on his one-off return for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, although a difficult session for compatriot Takuma Sato – which included an off-track excursion on his final run - left the KV man at the very bottom of the listings.
Sébastien Bourdais improved to sixth for Dale Coyne as Oriol Servia, Graham Rahal, Britain’s Mike Conway and E.J. Viso rounded out the top ten.
