Dixon claims victory at Motegi

IndyCar Series: Twin Ring Motegi: Sunday race results

Ganassi's Scott Dixon secured his second win of the season at Motegi on Sunday, leading home Penske rival Will Power who now takes control in the title race. Marco Andretti completed the podium for Andretti Autosport, while now former championship leader Dario Franchitti struggled to ninth after making contact with Ryan Briscoe.

"I have to give a lot of credit to Team Target; they gave me a fantastic car. In some sections of the race I was just cruising trying to save fuel," New Zealander Dixon explained. "We had great pit stops and fuel strategy, and everything was flawless."

A smooth start saw Dixon stay in control at the head of the field, maintaining strong pace ahead of Power. The biggest drama came on Lap 26 when, following a restart, Franchitti collided with Briscoe and lost his front wing. The Scot had to pit for a replacement, seeing his hard work go to waste as he dropped to the bottom of the order.

Alex Tagliani and Oriol Servià were major beneficiaries of the dramas, climbing to fourth and fifth respectively, with the rest of the finishers extremely close together on-track after a late caution period. Sébastien Bourdais wound up eighth ahead of Hélio Castroneves, while J.R. Hildebrand grabbed his fourth top ten finish of the year.

Franchitti’s various problems saw him resigned to ninth place at the chequered flag, narrowly fending off Mike Conway who rounded out the top ten. The reigning Champion now drops to second in the standings, a total of 13 points behind Power.
