Penske driver Will Power will start Sunday’s Kentucky Indy 300 from pole position, posting a two-lap run time of 48.594 seconds and averaging 219.283mph (352.902km/h). The Australian edged ahead of Graham Rahal and James Hinchcliffe for the top spot, while key title rival Dario Franchitti struggled outside the Fast Six.

Power’s impressive run secured him pole number eight of the season so far, sending out a clear message to Franchitti who faces a struggle if he is to close the points gap to Power ahead of the season finale at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Behind the top three runners, Ed Carpenter and J.R. Hildebrand delivered strongqualifying performances to claim fourth and fifth respectively, with Marco Andretti just behind.

Seventh ultimately went to Motegi winner Scott Dixon, with the New Zealander unable to repeat his impressive practice form. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Oriol Servià and Charlie Kimball rounded out the top ten, denying Franchitti of anything higher than 11th.

Sunday's race begins at 2.45pm local time (BST -5)
